Braces aren’t just for kids. Many adults choose to get braces to straighten their teeth, correct a misaligned jaw, or generally improve the appearance of their smile. Jonathan Shouhed, DDS, has helped many adult patients at West LA Orthodontics in Los Angeles get their dream smile with good old fashioned braces. Adult braces are the same thing as traditional metal braces; they’re just used to correct the teeth of older patients.
With all of the advances made in modern dentistry, people’s teeth are now staying stronger longer. Many people now maintain healthy and attractive smiles far into their twilight years, leading many older patients who may have never considered orthodontic treatments to elect to fix their smile with braces.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in five patients in orthodontic treatment is over 21 years old.
It’s never too late to improve your smile at West LA Orthodontics, and braces can give you the kind of smile that you’ve always dreamed of having.
In addition to enhancing your appearance, properly aligned teeth and bites have many health benefits, such as:
And treatment with braces has vastly improved in recent years. Braces today are far more comfortable and much less of a mouth- and eyesore than they used to be. They’re smaller, use fewer brackets, and have wires that are more effective and less noticeable.
Braces work by placing pressure on your teeth in order to gradually shift their position in your bite.
During the placement of your adult braces at West LA Orthodontics, small brackets bond to the surfaces of your teeth and an archwire threads through the brackets. Dr. Shouhed manipulates the direction and force of this archwire in order to guide your teeth into proper alignment.
When you’re undergoing treatment with braces, you have an appointment with Dr. Shouhed every four to six weeks to have your archwire tightened as your teeth progress into their desired position.
A full treatment with adult braces can take anywhere from one to three years. There are options for your braces that will make them less noticeable throughout your treatment, such as brackets made from ceramic or plastic.
It’s also possible to bond the brackets to the insides of your teeth, rather than the front, to make your treatment more discrete.
